Why go to Counseling?

Doctors treat a broken leg. Mechanics fix you car. So why do people feel weird making an appointment with a therapist? The short answer is that you shouldn't! We are professionals who have studied the human person for years. We want to see you become the best version of yourself! In the 20th century, counseling and mental health got a bad rap because of psychiatric hospitals, and that if you had a mental health problem, you'd end up there. We've come an awfully long way since then!

You're not crazy. The truth is, we live in a world that can be very difficult to make sense of! Sometimes, there may be big changes, problems, or events in life that need to be sorted out. Sometimes, the day to day just wears you out and you need to organize your thoughts and find a pathway forward. Or, perhaps, you are in a new phase of life and need to make sure it is getting off on the right foot. Coming to counseling does not make you weak or mean that you're messed up. Usually, coming to counseling is a sign of maturity, growth, and taking on responsibility. Talking through things with a therapist allows you to arrange your thoughts and feelings; this is something we as people are created for. We should never take on our problems alone. Oftentimes, our world makes us think that we need to have it all together and we don't need to burden other people with our own needs. This is not the message of Christ. We are created for connection, and God gave us minds and hearts to ponder the deep truths of life and reality. Counseling is meant to help you ponder those questions, address the hurt, and move forward bravely with life, empowered by Christ.
